I am still working my way towards getting back into photo, but it’s taking me a little bit longer than expected. The camera’s that I were bidding on eBay got bit out of my price range for the time being. Due to some recent changes in priorities it appears that a good portion of my expendable income for the relative future is going to actually be going into my car, but I still want to and plan to get back into photography in one way or another. For now a big portion of what I want to go is get organized, meaning I want to find and sort all my printed work and take all my quality “finished” digital work and get that organized and put in a safe place as well. As far as actually creating new work goes, I’m going to try to buy a lens for my nikon 35mm body and get some shooting done with that and see where that takes me (hopefully into a darkroom).
I’m bidding on a new camera on eBay. This may or may not mean that i’m getting back into photography. This is all still rather uncertain to me, however it would seem as though I very well be making my way back into the world of shooting photographs. It is yet to be determined to what extent I want to get back into things, but I guess I will just take it one step at a time. I am also yet to reconnect with my good friend and old photo teacher. I think once I know if I will have to availability to use the dark room at my old high school then I will know a lot better if I will be able to do things how I want because I can’t very well get back into traditional photography and processing without the availability of a wet lab.
If I do decide to get back into photography and start creating work again I know for a fact that I will have nothing to do with digital imaging. Its not worth my time to attempt to compete in the world of digital photography, unless I am ready to go out and spend three grand and go all out professional. Sometimes I get very frustrated at the thought of what digital imaging did to photography. Anyone can go out and buy a DSLR, take a mediocre black and white picture and be “a photographer”. If I do decide to get back into photography then I am going back the basics and starting from scratch. I will go buy a bunch of black and white 35 and 120mm film, a lens or two for my 35mm body, and I’ll grab my shitty plastic medium format camera and go shoot some pictures.
In the near future I am planning to reach out to my old photo teacher from high school. He not only served at a mentor to me while I was at my peak of activity level as far as photography is concerned, but he also wrote the letter of recommendation that got me into Purdue University’s photo program. I’m going to talk to him and see if it’s possible for me to get back into the darkroom at my high school so that I can get myself going again and actually get my hands dirty working on making some photos. If all goes well then who knows, perhaps ill get going and actually start producing some actual printed photographs and not just “pics” that go right onto a hard drive or photobucket.
After about two years of not even so much as considering getting back into photography, I recently got inspired by someone to dig out my big camera bag. This is the same bag that was once filled with thousands of dollars worth of semi-professional photo gear and now sits in my closet with nothing more than a couple camera bodies and some old film. It was not until recently that I had even thought that any time soon I would be taking photos with anything more than my iPhone’s camera. Nothing is decided but as of now the way I see things, it can’t hurt to pick up a few rolls of medium format film and see what happens. I still have to see if I even want to get back into photography and if so then to what extent and in what ways. I know that if I start shooting any “actual” photography of any kind again that good things will probably come of it.
